  • Goedhuis, November 2017

Explosive citrus, lime fruit aromas. This is everything Chevalier should be, refined, subtle, elegant and yet immensely layered and concentrated. With superb purity and exuding panache, the finish is a balance between citrus fruits and freshly buttered warm toast. Quite lovely.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 92-94

The 2016 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru, like the other of Leflaive’s grand crus, was affected by the frost. This takes time to open but eventually reveals some lovely yellow flower, flint and oyster shell aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is understated on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, but maybe the Bâtard-Montrachet demonstrated a little more drive and nervosité. There is something sedate about this Chevalier-Montrachet, with a lovely touch of spice on the aftertaste. Drink 2021-2036

  • Burghound, June 2018, Score: 94-97

A cool and markedly restrained nose only grudgingly reveals its notes of mineral reduction, essence of Granny Smith apples, acacia blossom and a lovely array of spice elements. The tightly wound and almost painfully intense middle weight plus flavors are stony to the point that the palate feel is akin to rolling small pebbles around in the mouth, all wrapped in an explosively long finish. This is an aristocratic Chevalier that somehow manages to gracefully combine overt power and a taut muscularity with Zen-like harmony. This too is a definite 'wow' wine. Don't miss! Drink: 2031+

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 95

The Chevalier is the king of the cellar in 2016, wafting from the glass with a reserved bouquet of lime zest, citrus pith, chalky soil tones, white flowers and crème pâtissière. On the palate the wine is full-bodied but more tensile than the powerful Bâtard, with lovely vertical energy and greater depth and seriousness. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040

Doamine Leflaive's vineyards in Puligny Montrachet are steeped in history and the current generation can look back to 1717 for the first Leflaive family occupation of the farm buildings that they use today. The domaine was founded by Joseph Leflaive, who came to Burgundy in 1905. Anne-Claude Leflaive, the granddaughter of Joseph was appointed to run the domaine in 1990. A fervent proponent of biodynamic viticulture, Anne-Claude converted the domaine to biodynamics. After her untimely death in 2015, Brice de La Morandiere's, Anne-Claude's nephew and great grand son of Joseph Leflaive took on the mantle. He upholds the terroir-orientated, sustainable winemaking philosophy of the family.Read less

Region

Chevalier Montrachet

Chevalier-Montrachet is a tiny Grand Cru appellation for white wine situated on the stony slopes just above Le Montrachet towards the southern end of the Cote d'Or. The wines are exceptional, if slightly lighter in style than their neighbour down the hill.
