Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2017

Only two barrels were made in 2016. This has a deep and brilliant ruby colour. Syrah-like black spice is intertwined with the juicy dark fruit on the nose. The palate displays crunchy cherry notes and the tension of pink peppercorn spice, with jagged tannins that will need a little time. Powerful, with a long life ahead of it.

  • ST

    Stephen Tanzer, January 2018,
    Score: 92-94

Dark red with ruby tones. Deep, soil-driven aromas of dark raspberry, minerals and violet, plus a sexy gamey nuance. Wonderfully fine-grained and concentrated, conveying strong smoky soil tones and an impression of sweetness. This strong, serious vin de terroir finishes gripping and long, with harmonious ripe tannins.

Producer

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations.

Region

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
