  • Goedhuis, December 2017

Full of cranberries and pomegranates, this is very Chambolle with its refreshing red berry fruit core. It achieves a feeling of silky generosity, despite the low yields. It has a tannic tension on the finish, providing a lovely length of flavour.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 86-88

The 2016 Chambolle Musigny Village comes from the village part of Beaux Bruns. Despite a little reduction there is pretty red fruit lurking underneath. The palate is a little rustic on the entry with slightly rough tannin, but there is good body here and it is well balanced on the linear, grippy finish. Drink 2020-2030

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 88-90

Bright ruby-red. Very dark aromas of blueberry, violet, bitter chocolate, licorice and pungent minerals. A distinctly dark style of Chambolle-Musigny, offering very good concentration and a fine-grained texture, with the flavors of black cherry and bitter chocolate showing hints of superripeness as well as slightly edgy licorice and herb notes. A bit less interesting today in the mouth than it is on the nose, this village wine will require a few years of cellaring to harmonize.

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 90

The Chambolle villages hails from the part of the lieu-dit Beaux Bruns which is classified as village rather than premier cru, and while Louis Boillot jokes that the difference between this wine and Ghislaine Barthod’s Beaux Bruns premier cru demonstrates that the appellation boundaries were correctly drawn, this is still a superb wine. A pure bouquet of creamy red and black fruit, peony and subtle soil tones introduces a concentrated, intense palate with a deep core of fruit, rich tannins and considerable dimension and amplitude for its level. Louis is the seventh generation of vignerons in Burgundy from a family who is mostly known for their Côte de Beaune wines such as Pommard and Volnay however, several Côte de Nuits appellations including Gevrey Chambertin were added to the repertoire in 1978. Many of these are parcels of extremely old vines, and the wines have a natural concentration and silky persistence. Today Louis vinifies and ages his wines in Chambolle Musigny in the same cellar as his other half, Ghislaine Barthod. In fact, it has been said that his influences have helped create the celestial beauties that have risen from her vineyards. Both are ably assisted by their son, Clément. He has been instrumental in Louis Boillot’s recent purchase of vineyards in Beaujolais, Moulin à Vent, where these skilled Burgundians bring their expertise to the Gamay grape.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
