Goedhuis, December 2017
This was one of the stand-out wines in this tasting. It has a brilliant ruby colour and hugely appealing red berry fruited nose with sweet spice. The palate has freshness and that creamy texture Nicolas is so good at achieving.
Jancis Robinson, November 2017
100% new oak. Barrel sample. Very dark crimson. Super-intense black fruit on the nose. Dark and chalky on the palate, the tannins very fine but multi-layered. Wonderful freshness with a lightness of touch that almost hides the intensity here. Incredibly juicy on the finish. Refined and fresh and long. Drink 2028-2040 (JH)
Maison Roche de Bellene
Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
