Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, May 2018

This wine bursts with crunchy fresh fruits and liquorice spice. Dark berries with vibrant acidity give a fresh depth to the palate. Its agile body contains silky, velvet-like tannins. This wine’s power comes not in its weight, but in its astonishing length.

  • BURG

    Burghound, Janaury 2018,
    Score: 91-94

An appealingly airy and wonderfully spicy nose reflects the cool and elegant essence of red currant and plenty of floral elements that include violet, lavender and an interesting hint of acacia. The strikingly sleek yet imposingly sized flavors possess perhaps the best delineation of any wine in the range while delivering excellent length on the refined, focused and beautifully persistent finale. This classy effort should amply reward extended cellaring. Drink 2031+

Producer

Laurent Ponsot

Laurent Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most internationally renowned winemakers. In 2017 he formally left his family domaine in Morey St Denis, and struck out on his own with a new winemaking facility in Gilly-lès- Cîteaux from where he now runs his solo project, started in 2015, full-time. He had been instrumental in Domaine Ponsot’s rise to fame, and had built a reputation as a maverick winemaker with his unique style that combined late harvesting, destemming, and complete aversion to new oak in the cellar. His wines are concentrated and long lived, and have won him admirers the world over. He is a passionate campaigner and prominent activist in the fight against fake wine on the secondary market. Having left his family domaine in the hands of his sisters, Laurent is joined by his son, Clément, at his new project, and together they are continuing to make their hugely exciting wines. Much of the fruit comes from his share of the family vineyards that remained with him after his departure, whilst the new project has given him the opportunity to explore new appellations.

Region

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
