Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, March 2020
This is entering its drinking prime. Appealing plum fruits aromas and the natural volume of ripe Merlot richness sit comfortably with the intrinsic freshness so typical of the 2016 vintage. A very complete wine, refined tannins provide weight and give an added dimension of complexity. Delicious over the next 3 years.

Goedhuis, August 2019
We have followed Mille Anges for multiple years and the 2016 is arguably their greatest wine to date. Embodying the elegance and freshness of the vintage, it displays delicious red and black fruits, underlying spice, velvety tannins and a sculpted mouthfeel.

Producer
Château des Mille Anges

Formerly a convent, Château des Mille Anges has been producing fine wines for more than three centuries. It was purchased in 1994 by Mrs. Heather van Ekris and major investments have been made by her in new barriques, new storage facilities, expansion and renovation of the cuverie and state-of-the-art vinification equipment. Today, the wine produced by Mille Anges is matured in oak barrels of which 33% are replaced by new oak barrels each year. The vineyard is situated 17 miles southeast of Bordeaux, on the hills of the right bank of the river Garonne. Shaped like a half moon, the vineyard is on steep slopes which give it natural drainage and the southeast to southwest exposure gives it optimal sunshine. The soil benefits from the harmonious mixture of gravel, limestone and clay subsoil. The vines range in age from 4 years to 40 years with an average age of approximately 20 years. 70% of the production is Merlot, 15% is Cabernet Sauvignon and the remaining 15% is Cabernet Franc.
Region
Premières Côtes de Bordeaux
The Premières Côtes de Bordeaux area stretches from the north of the city of Bordeaux along a 40 mile strip to the south west of the Entres deux Mers. The best vineyards are on the gravelly slopes which rise from the river banks. Many of the red Premières Côtes de Bordeaux wines are Merlot based and although they do not have the structure for ageing like Bordeaux's more famous examples they do offer good drinking after a few years in bottle. They are a big step up in quality from straight Bordeaux AC, as a small group of ambitious producers have a real sense of regional identity and pride.
