Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, July 2018

This Grand Cru site is early ripening, and was picked a whole five weeks ahead of the Clos Windsbul during 2016s long harvest. Its granite soils are dry, warm, and well drained, and produce a wine that is rich, velvety, and voluminous, with the ripe flavours of sweet apricot, and the mineral freshness typical of fine Riesling.

Producer

Zind-Humbrecht

Zind Humbrecht was created in 1959 and is one of the greatest domains in Alsace. Léonard and Olivier Humbrecht are a father and son team who produce splendid wines year after year. Zind Humbrecht vines are cultivated on the top quality sites and they are committed to producing very low yields. A typical yield for Zind Humbrecht vines is 35 hl/ha rather than 70 hl/ha which is legally acceptable for Grand Cru vineyards. Léonard Humbrecht has always been a believer in letting the characteristics of a vineyard show through the application of low yields. His commitment to working with the finest terroirs in Alsace and allowing them to shine in this way led him to purchase steep, difficult sites such as Rangen and Clos Windsbuhl.

Region

Alsace

On the Eastern border of France lying between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine river, this much-disputed area has for a large part of its existence been in the hands of Germany. This is visually apparent in the half-timbered houses lining the streets in medieval-looking villages and vinously evident in the prevalence of white wine in the region. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat make up the majority of plantings and are the only varieties permitted in the Alsace Grand Cru appellation. Pinot Noir (the only significant black grape variety), Pinot Blanc, Chasselas and Sylvaner also get a look in. Wines are made in all styles from sparkling and dry to the most unctuously sweet botrytised pudding wines.
