    The 2016 Barolo is supple, forward and easy to like. Sweet macerated cherry, mint, cinnamon and orange peel are nicely pushed forward in this racy, beautifully open-knit Barolo from the Scavino family. Drink it over the next handful of years. The 2016 is just lovely, and a real pleasure to drink. Drink 2021-2028.

    Showing Enrico Scavino's signature at the bottom of the label, this is a classic expression of Barolo. The Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo offers impeccable balance and an all-pleasing approach. There is something for everyone, especially die-hard Nebbiolo lovers, with energy, power, aromatic finesse and elegant tannins. Fruit for this wine is sourced from a half-dozen vineyard sites from across the appellation, so you get some of the power of Serralunga d'Alba and the precision of Castiglione Falletto. The scope of this wine is wide and broad, offering sweeping panoramic views of this unique grape from Piedmont. This is a terrific value. Drink 2023-2040.

Paolo Scavino is one of Barolo’s great estates, making seriously good, benchmark Barolo from their small winery in Castiglione Falletto. As Kerin O’Keefe notes, this small, family-run producer “makes superlative Barolos from some of the greatest crus in the entire denomination”. Paolo Scavino is the region’s great innovator, alongside Elio Altare, and has been instrumental in elevating Barolo’s reputation. Winemaker Enrico Scavino combines a traditional approach with more forward-thinking techniques to produce instantly likeable wines that do not need decades in the cellar to soften. As you can imagine, quantities are limited.

Piedmont

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
