Goedhuis, December 2017
Made from a blend of two parcels in this lesser known and often overlooked appellation that sits just above Volnay and Meursault. These vineyards are slightly cooler than Pommard or Volnay and have produced their characterful red cherry and pink peppercorn notes, with small crunchy tannins and fresh, elegant balance in 2016. A reduced programme of very light pigéage prevented any greenness in the wine, and it shows the creamy texture and fresh notes of the vintage in an accessible structure.

Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 90-92
The 2016 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru was reduced to eight barrels this year with one of those new, and the fruit this year including 10% whole bunch. It has a clean and fresh black plum and red cherry-scented bouquet that is nicely defined. I appreciate the purity here, simmering undergrowth scents tucked just underneath the carapace of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit—cranberry and raspberry preserve—with a light tang of soy toward the vivacious finish and a pinch of black pepper on the aftertaste. There is not much of it, but what there is, is delightful. Drink 2019-2028

Burghound, April 2018, Score: 89-92
A ripe, pretty and very fresh nose offers up ample earth character on the red and dark berry fruit-scented aromas. There is both excellent cut and punch to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a sappy mouth feel on the relatively fine finish that exhibits almost no rusticity. One to check out for value as this is very good. Sweet spot Outstanding. Drink 2022+

Clos des Épeneaux is Pommard’s most celebrated climat. The 5.23 hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828. Paul Zinetti took over from Benjamin Leroux as régisseur in 2014, and is rising to every challenge at this small, characterful domaine. They also have small holdings in Volnay and Auxey Duresses and, while these wines have the distinctive character of quintessential Côte de Beaune, they are also some of the most sophisticated, nuanced expressions you might taste across these villages. An understated use of new oak matches the textured fruit, and gentle handling in combination with intuitive biodynamic practices afford these wines both strength and delicacy. The domaine has begun to noticeably outpace its neighbours and redefine how the finest terroir of Pommard is capable of not only power but elegance as well.Read less

Region
Auxey Duresses
Auxey Duresses is a lesser known appellation of 107 hectares located in the eastern hills above Meursault. Its slightly cooler climate with mostly north facing slopes enable its wines to be particularly crisp, fresh and occasionally austere in less warm vintages. Though three-quarters of its production is white, there are a handful of growers who produce reds. Due to its more modest status, its wines tend to provide excellent value for money . They are well worth seeking out particularly in warmer vintages.
