    Hints of tobacco, mocha and black fruits on the nose. This is a full and intense wine, with a bolder tannic structure than some years, but never losing sight of sweetness and the characteristic freshness of the vintage. Extremely good.

    The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very charming, very pure and seductive bouquet with copious blackberry, raspberry preserve and limestone scents. With a few swirls of the glass it become floral and even more enticing. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It it not as generous as the bouquet at the moment, but there is purity and verve here, very sophisticated and showing immense precision on the finish. I can imagine this being backward for 3-5 years after bottling, so be prepared to cellar this and reap the rewards later. Drink 2020-2045

Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
