  • Goedhuis, December 2016

A very layered smoky liquorice nose. In the palate it is very youthful and backward in nature, but the underlying drive and vigour promise huge potential.

  • Neal Martin, November 2021, Score: 96

The 2015 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is very intense on the nose, beautifully defined with scents of black cherries, iodine, pressed violets and just a hint of dark chocolate in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite tight at first (this bottle had not been decanted) with a spicy, quite saline finish. Perhaps a little closed down at the moment, this superb Romanée-Saint-Vivant needs another 4-5 years in bottle. Tasted at the Domaine de L’Arlot tasting at La Cabotte in London. Drink 2026-2055

  • Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 95-97

The 2015 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru also includes 100% whole bunch fruit. I left this 4-5 minutes to really open up. The whole bunch works very well because you cannot detect the stem addition. It is very precise with crystalline red cherry, wild strawberry and limestone, gaining intensity with practically every swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a keen line of acidity, fresh and vibrant with a touch of spice towards the finish. It is an understated and linear Romanée-Saint-Vivant, very sophisticated and deserving of several years in bottle. Sublime. Drink Date 2022 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 93-95

Here the expressive nose is spicier still as well as more complex, combining Asian-style tea, sandalwood, floral and a broad range of red and dark fruit aromas. There is an enchanting inner mouth perfume to the silky yet intense middle weight flavors that possess an ultra-refined palate impression, all wrapped in a hugely long and quite firmly structured finale. This is a classic RSV that is going to require a minimum of 8 to 10 years of cellaring and reward double that. Don't miss. (93-95)/2030+

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
