Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 90-92
The 2015 Nuits St Georges, matured in 50% new oak, has an upfront and bold bouquet with raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas, quite Vosne-like in style. The palate has a little more structure than the Vosne-Romanée Village. There is impressive backbone in situ, slightly grainy in texture and with a mineral, limestone-tinged finish. Another very fine offering from Sebastien Cathiard. Drink 2018-2030

Burghound, January 2017, Score: 88-91
Firm reduction hides all but a touch of earth. I like the sense of underlying tension to the moderately muscular and admirably concentrated medium-bodied flavors that also culminate in a youthfully austere finish where the tannins are more robust and angular. This is very Nuits in character. (88-91)/2022+

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region
Nuits Saint Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
