Tasting Notes
-
Neal Martin,
Score: 92-94From 80- or 90-year-old vines, the 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Songes" Vieilles Vignes was aged in 30% new oak, but includes more whole bunch fruit (60%). Here we move into more black fruit territory: blackcurrant, bilberry and touches of dark cherry, a subtle orange rind scent that becomes more intense as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannin, vibrant on the entry with good mineralité, hints of balsamic and spice lending complexity to the very composed and refined finish. It constitutes another great Gevrey from Heresztyn-Mazzini.
Producer
Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini

Polish Jean Heresztyn arrived as a labourer in Burgundy in 1932. Working in Fixin and Gevery Chambertin, he made homself a name and began to asssemble his own respected domaine, now based in the town of Gevrey-Chambertin. He is succeeded by his two grandsons who manage the vineyards and make the wine along with their wives, who help with the business side. New additions to the winery have allowed their wines to further improve since 1999.Usually 60% new oak barrels are used for the premier crus and 70% for the Grand Cru, Clos St. Denis.
Region
Côte de Nuits-Villages
This communal appellation covers the vineyards of Fixin, Brochon, Premeaux, Comblanchien, and Corgoloin. Spread along the length of the Cotes de Nuits the wines of the different communes are, unsurprisingly, varied, reflecting a range of different exposures and nuances of soild type. The vast majority of production is red, with just a smattering of Chardonnay grown. The reds can offer very good value from the better producers.
