Goedhuis, March 2021
The Loosen Erdener Pralat vineyard sits within a miniature amphitheatre of south facing slopes, with aged vines dating back to the beginning of the last century growing on red iron bearing slate. This is a superbly aromatic and full wine. Light straw in colour it expresses characters of quince, Seville orange and zest of lime. It has a lovely fullness of fruit in the mouth, giving the impression of richness and a more viscous mouth feel than the Erdener and Urziger. This has extraordinary intensity and there is a feeling of tannic structure on the finish, hugely layered with amazing depth and weight. Quite superb.

Worldly, dynamic and charismatic, Ernst Loosen is an undeniable character. He has been at the helm of his 200-year-old family domaine since 1988. With his initiative and savoir faire, over the years he has helped re-establish the Mosel on a wider scale as one of the most exciting wine growing areas in the world. Its terroir is exceptional, composed primarily of grey-blue and red slate that climb up to tremendously steep cliffs - the steepest in the world to be exact. Due to the Middle Mosel's lack of actual soil and incredibly good drainage, most of the vines are not grafted onto American rootstocks as phylloxera cannot survive. As a result, the vines grow exceptionally slowly creating wines that tend to be wonderfully pure, tender and focused. Ernst's holdings are in the some of the most reputable vineyards.Read less
