Tasting Notes
-
Burghound, January 2017,
Score: 91-93A brooding, ripe and almost mute nose only grudgingly offers up its aromas of various dark berries, earth and sauvage wisps. There is once again exceptionally good richness and volume to the full-bodied, mouth coating and powerful broad-shouldered flavors that deliver good if not excellent length on the noticeably warm and firm finish. This robust and imposing effort should benefit from extended cellaring because even with the warm it’s clear that the tannins are fully mature. (91-93)/2027+

Stephen Tanzer, January 2017,
Score: 92-95Dark red with ruby tones. Reduced aromas of black cherry, licorice and wild herbs. Then wonderfully silky yet also utterly primary in the mouth, offering high-pitched black cherry and herb flavors and finishing with substantial granular tannins. Almost austere but not exactly hard, even if it's rather inexpressive today. But this wine from 80-year-old vines has the material and balance to make an outstanding bottle. Bernstein describes these vines as "in the middle of the Clos on its south side, not far from Echézeaux."

Producer
Oliver Bernstein

Olivier Bernstien set up his small, elite négociant business in Beaune in 2007, and over the past ten years has gained a reputation for his stellar clutch of exquisite premiers and grands crus from the Côte de Nuits. The 2012 release put him firmly on the map, and since then he has met the challenges of each subsequent vintage with aplomb, producing wines of disarming beauty and grace. The most recent release, his 2016s, mark a high point in the canon, where glossy fruit is perfectly paired with luxurious but refined oak (he uses 100% new French oak, in barrels custom made for each cuvée by the cooper Chassin).
