Tasting Notes

    Goedhuis, December 2016

Les Encégnières has the reputation as Chassagne’s finest lieu dit and this cuvée highlights that quality. A full and concentrated style with hints of hazelnut and almonds, with a characteristic Chassagne earthy texture on the finish. Full of personality.

    Score: 86-88

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet Enceignieres, from vines close to Bâtard-Montrachet, has a reserved, stony, Puligny-like bouquet that opens nicely in the glass, just a hint of blackberry leaf developing after 3-4 minutes. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, very taut and linear with a dash of spice towards the finish. It perhaps just lacks a little charm at the moment, but hopefully that will develop with time in bottle. Drink Date 2017 - 2023

Producer

Domaine Etienne Sauzet

Etienne Sauzet is one of the great estates of Puligny Montrachet, taking its name from current incumbent Emilie Riffault's great grandfather who founded this domaine in the early 1900s. It boasts 15 hecatres of vineyards, comprising four white grands crus in Puligny and Chassagne and nine premiers crus. Today, under Emilie and husband Benoit's direction, their owned vineyards are fully biodynamic and they are one of the flag bearers for the appellation of Puligny.

Region

Chassagne-Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
