Goedhuis, December 2016
A highlight of Nicholas’s quite astounding flight of wines, this is superb. Its concentrated berry fruits are tightly coiled around an explosive core of juicy tannins. There is an effortless sweetness to the tender fruit; it couldn’t be anything other than grand cru.
Jancis Robinson, December 2016,
Dark crimson. Such intensity of gorgeous fruit. The fruit hides the tannins. You could drink this tonight! So sweet! Wild!!! Drink 2025-2045
Maison Roche de Bellene
Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.
Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
