  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 91-93

This has appealing, forward aromatics of sweet fruit tempered by a savoury attitude. There are well-integrated tannins and a lovely drive on the palate, which balance well with the fresh acidity.

  • Neal Martin, July 2019, Score: 95

The 2015 Léoville Barton has one of the richest bouquets in the appellation, boasting almost ostentatious blackberry, raspberry and bilberry scents on the nose, suffused with crushed limestone and light graphite aromas. The medium-bodied palate is taut and crisp, delivering a fine bead of acidity and freshness from beginning to end. Mainly black fruit here, with suggestions of leather and mocha toward the finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

  • Neal Martin, April 2016, Score: 88-90

The 2015 Langoa Barton is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc picked between 19 September and 5 October, matured in 60% new oak. It has a slightly smudged bouquet at first, a mixture of red and black fruit, a little sous-bois and tobacco developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannin, veering more towards red fruit here, but laced with tobacco and cedar notes. The finish is austere and perhaps mean at the moment, so hopefully it will develop more flesh by the time of bottling. I must confess that I cannot remember tasting Langoa next to Léoville Barton at this stage and finding such a disparity between the two wines, attested by tasting the 2014s just afterwards and finding them closer together in terms of quality.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 90-93

The 2015 Langoa Barton is fleshy, open-knit and absolutely delicious. Sweet red cherry and pomegranate are pushed forward, while hints of violet, lavender and spice add freshness and lift to the succulent finish. The gracious, feminine side of Saint-Julien comes through in spades. This is very nicely done. Tasted two times.

  • Robert Parker, Feb 2018, Score: 90/100

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Langoa Barton is scented of cedar and Marmite toast with black fruit and fertile earth notes. The medium-bodied palate is oaky with a good fruit core, fine-grained tannins and nice freshness on the finish. Lisa Perrotti Brown Score 90/100 Drink dates 2019 - 2033

  • James Suckling, April 2016, Score: 92-93

Very ripe and fruit with lots of mature berry and plum character. Full body, round tannins and a savory finish. Juicy.

  • Decanter, April 2016, Score: 92

Fine fragrance and fruit: shows the purity and depth of a classic vineyard with nothing exaggerated. Discreet but full of character; in perfect balance.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 17.5+

(54 Cabernet Sauvignon, 38 Merlot, 8 Cabernet Franc) | 60% new oak. | 13% alc. A crisp, vital wine with punch and excitement, this is not a lusty, rich Langoa but a tense, nervy style with great line and length. The fruit is a shade lighter than in 2014 and yet it will be a longer-lived wine. Good effort.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 17

lmost timid on the nose, this wine is so polite. After you … Quite a bit of acidity compared with some. Very straight-backed rather than full of pleasure. Just depends on your preferred style - but this certainly builds towards an impressive finish. Drink 2027-2042

  • Tim Atkin, May 2016, Score: 93

Both the Barton wines are impressive in 2015, with this one just the lighter of the two. It’s still got plenty of structure and oak, but the elegance of the patrician Cabernet is very pure and transparent here. Drink: 2022-30

Producer

Château Langoa Barton

This château is owned by the Barton family (with Léoville Barton). Serving as a home and a winecellar, Langoa took its name from "gué" an old French word for the small stream that flows at thesouthern end of the property. Unlike the classical style of its stable mate, Langoa tends to be more approachable and flattering at a young age with fleshy fruit and textured tannins.

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
