Goedhuis, July 2020
Bold, luscious and concentrated, Il Poggione’s dark cherry and subtle herb-infused Brunello displays the powerful, iron-fisted elements of the warm 2015 vintage. It perfectly encapsulates the modern side to Brunello di Montalcino with the wine raised in French oak barrique rather than traditional ‘botte’. This is a really sensational and perfectly priced Brunello that will win many fans, that’s of course if they haven’t been won over already by previous vintages!

Wine Advocate, July 2020,
Score: 97The Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a darker and more concentrated appearance than many of its peers. The wine is beautifully abundant and fragrant in the most exuberant and expressive manner. You will recognize aromas of moist soil, tobacco and smoke. Candied cherry hovers over the entire bouquet. Fruit is sourced from older vines (all over 25 years old). Il Poggione occupies a special spot within the Montalcino appellation, and the area always produces slightly more concentrated and powerful wines. I find that to be particularly true in this gorgeous 2015 vintage. I am also very attracted to that almost dusty note of crushed mineral that rides long on the full-bodied finish. Il Poggione's Brunello is also distinguished by firm, youthful tannin that need a few more years to unwind.

Eric Guido, Vinous, July 2020,
Score: 97Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers up a dark, earthy, almost animal-like expression, showing black soil and undergrowth, giving way to crushed black cherry, dusty spice, and dried florals which lift the experience. On the palate, soft, fleshy textures usher in fresh cherry and strawberry, as brisk acids add energy, with savory herbs and minerals saturating, as the 2015 Il Poggione’s fruit nearly masks its structural core. The finish is long yet fresh, with classic, fine tannins, dried red fruits and pretty inner floral tones lingering throughout this perfectly balanced expression. The 2015 is pure class and built for the cellar.

Producer
Il Poggione

There are few producers anywhere in Italy that can match the remarkable consistency of Montalcino's Tenuta Il Poggione year on year. This extraordinary winery covers an area of 600 hectares, of which 125 are under vine, making it one of Montalcino's largest producers. You therefore wouldn't automatically expect such a high level of quality, but Il Poggione's extreme success lies in its meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and significant investment in research and development. Il Poggione is not only one of the most visually impressive wineries to be found anywhere in Italy but also a producer of probably the most rewarding Brunello on the market.
Region
Montalcino
Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
