Tasting Notes

Burghound, January 2017,
Score: 93-95A background whiff of wood can be discerned on the notably ripe yet fresh nose of spicy and earthy red and black cherry liqueur-like scents. The freshness and energy continue onto the big-bodied and powerful flavors that are at once muscular but sleek while delivering terrific depth and length on the impeccably well-balanced finish. The prior wines are clearly of very fine quality but this is definitely at another level. Don't miss! (93-95)/2030+

Stephen Tanzer, January 2018,
Score: 96Bright medium red. Red berry aromas complicated by musky game and soil tones and lifted by white pepper, flowers and savory herbs. A wonderfully deep, penetrating grand cru with outstanding inner-mouth saline minerality and piquant notes of pepper, flowers, spices and herbs. Great energy and precision here, not to mention transparency to soil. Still a bit youthfully imploded but already conveys an impression of superb balance and the tannins are utterly smooth. The wonderfully stimulating, salty, resounding finish stains the palate and leaves the mouth perfumed. Will this wine shut down in bottle?

Producer
Oliver Bernstein

Olivier Bernstien set up his small, elite négociant business in Beaune in 2007, and over the past ten years has gained a reputation for his stellar clutch of exquisite premiers and grands crus from the Côte de Nuits. The 2012 release put him firmly on the map, and since then he has met the challenges of each subsequent vintage with aplomb, producing wines of disarming beauty and grace. The most recent release, his 2016s, mark a high point in the canon, where glossy fruit is perfectly paired with luxurious but refined oak (he uses 100% new French oak, in barrels custom made for each cuvée by the cooper Chassin).
Region
Bonnes Mares
Perched between Morey-St-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny in the heart of the Cotes de Nuits this Grand Cru appellation can balance the best characteristics of both. Bonnes Mares wines combine fragrance and femininity with body and power. A seductive combination indeed.
