    Neal Martin, December 2016,
    Score: 90-92

The 2015 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Valozières, from mainly clay soils, has an attractive nose that is a mixture of red and black fruit, the oak neatly integrated with good tension and vigor while remaining "classic" in style. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, tensile tannin. This is full of bright raspberry and strawberry fruit, a touch of blueberry towards the finish. The acidity lends this tension and vibrancy, and it constitutes one of Domaine Chandon des Briailles best wines this year. This comes recommended. Drink Date 2018 - 2027

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Aloxe-Corton

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majority of Pinot Noir is planted in thesouthern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from Aloxe-Corton tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
