Tasting Notes
-
Stephen Tanzer,
Score: 91+Good bright medium red. Medicinal black cherry, dark raspberry, licorice and minerals on the nose, along with a full dose of spicy oak. Creamy on entry, then very firm and minerally in the middle, showing a captivating fine-grained texture and superb density. But this is not a fleshy, sweet wine in the context of this cellar. The persistent finish features good juicy lift, chewy tannins and a lingering note of bitter cherry. I find this a bit austere today.
Producer
Lucien le Moine

Lucien Lemoine is the name of the micro-negociant operation founded by Lebanese husband and wife team Mounir and Rotem Saouma. Mounir used to live and work in a monastery but left to study Oeonology and pursue his passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Several years living and working in Burgundy helped Mounir learn the ropes while wife Rotem orientated her studies in Dijon towards wine. Mounir's time in the Cistercian monastery is the inspiration behind the name of their operation: 'le Moine' means monk in French and Lucien was the name given to him by the monks. Lucien Le Moine sources exclusively premier cru or grand cru vineyard parcels and raises them in their vaulted cellars in Beaune, bringing a maximum of 100 barrels to the market each year.
Region
Vosne-Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
