Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2015

Splitting Echezeaux, Richebourg and Romanée St Vivant this is an exceptional vineyard which achieved excellent ripeness in 2014. Brilliant purple in colour, it has a mouth-coating volume of unctuous smoky berry fruit flavours. It has a firm intensity and a brooding finish. A wine with real attitude…

    Neal Martin, December 2015,
    Score: 93-95

The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Suchots displayed just a very small reduction on the nose, but still, one can discern the deeply layered black cherry, crème de cassis and boysenberry notes that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin. There is a keen line of acidity, just a touch of spice entering towards the finish that is beautifully delineated and sustained in the mouth. There is a sense of completeness and harmony to this les Suchots, and it should age over 20 years without too much difficulty. Drink 2018-2040

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2016,
    Score: 92-94

A more deeply pitched array of cassis, spice and floral aromas introduce super rich and impressively concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that completely coat the mouth with dry extract. The moderately austere, balanced and hugely long finish exhibits a sufficient amount of supporting tannins that this will need fully 12 to 15 years to arrive at its full majority. In a word, terrific. Sweet spot 92-94. Drink 2026+

    Sarah Marsh, December 2015,
    Score: 19

This is deep and juicy and has plenty of flesh and generosity. Depth to the texture; velvet tannin, smooth and dense mid palate. An accessible and urbane Suchots. And there is a floral quality to the palate and on the finish…aromatic…. Top notch Suchots.

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne-Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
