Goedhuis, December 2015
Bright shining purple colour, with masses of sweet loganberry fruit aromas. This is a full and fleshy style, with balancing freshness.
Neal Martin, December 2015,
The 2014 Volnay Villages has a juicy bouquet with red cherries and raspberry fruit, touches of orange blossom, quite sensual and flamboyant, very Volnaysian. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity. There is so much roundness here, sensual in texture with plush red cherries and raspberry tinged with soy towards the long finish. Just lovely! Drink 2017-2027
Domaine Joseph Voillot
The Voillots have been winemakers for 5 generations. They produce 17 appellations from 35 parcels in 10 hectares across 4 communes including Pommard and Volnay. Since 1995, Joseph's hearty and jolly son-in-law, Jean-Pierre Charlot, has taken over the domaine. His personality makes it worth the trip alone. Utterly sincere and fantastically funny, we always leave with a smile on our face. Luckily the wines are superb as well - terroir-driven, classically styled and silky - they are hallmarks of top quality Côte de Beaune reds.
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
