Goedhuis, December 2015
This centrally positioned 1er Cru is, for many of the Volnaysien, the most classical example of the appellation, always balancing a roundness and charm with an in-built structure. Jean-Pierre Charlot has made a fine Champans in 2014. Stunning brambly flavours and an excellent volume are followed by a fine tannic backbone which gives weight and persistence. Classy wine.
Neal Martin, December 2015,
The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru les Champans is more closed than its Volnay cousins at the moment, although there is certainly plenty of tensile fruit here, more black than red, with hints of orange rind and fig coming through with aeration. The palate is very refined, wonderfully poised with a keen line of acidity, adorned with wonderful symmetry towards the finish. This is just superb - a sophisticated Champans for long-term ageing. Domaine Joseph Voillot
The Voillots have been winemakers for 5 generations. They produce 17 appellations from 35 parcels in 10 hectares across 4 communes including Pommard and Volnay. Since 1995, Joseph's hearty and jolly son-in-law, Jean-Pierre Charlot, has taken over the domaine. His personality makes it worth the trip alone. Utterly sincere and fantastically funny, we always leave with a smile on our face. Luckily the wines are superb as well - terroir-driven, classically styled and silky - they are hallmarks of top quality Côte de Beaune reds.
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
