Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 91-93
The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralité, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its élevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment). Drink 2018-2035

Jancis Robinson, November 2015, Score: 17.5
From below the main road and two sets of east-west rows. He sees Champans as a summary of the others. Very sweetly fragrant. Very hedonistic. Sweet start and then very fluid. Much less obvious tannins than the others – more obviously Volnay? Quite juicy by d’Angerville standards. Drink 2024-2036

Sarah Marsh, December 2015, Score: 18.55
22hl/ha sweet and smooth and rich, yet elegant too with its satin rich texture. Depth and elegance. It is fluid across the palate, very nicely woven and sweet and flowing onto the long and rich finish. Drink from 2019

Arriving at the family Château in Volnay and standing in the famed Clos des Ducs overlooking the village and its other 1er crus below always gives me a huge thrill. Region
Volnay
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
