This wine could not be made in 2013 because of the devastating hail in the vineyard, so it is lovely to come back to it in 2014. Bright red fruit flavours, with a slightly wild autumnal touch. A very rounded wine, with great poise. Distinctive, full and giving on the finish. Lovely.

The 2014 Savigny les Beaune 1er CrulLes Lavières comes from south-facing vines and had in fact, already been bottled when I visited the domaine in November. It has a defined, slightly tertiary, loose-knit bouquet that coalesces in the glass, a touch of autumn leaf infusing the brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, tightly knit at the moment but with a keen thread of acidity and plenty of salinity coming through on the finish. Drink over the next 3-4 years. Drink 2016-2020

30cm and clay and then hard limestone..roots in the limestone. this explains the floral aromas. sweetness of fruit and the minerals. This has more aromatics; strawberry and summer fruits, very expressive - and floral notes. Lovely silky palate..slips smoothly, glides easily..a very gentle, calm wine with fine texture…and gorgeous fruit. Delicate and delicious…and at the end, just the freshness which lift it…a touch of mineral, salty at the end.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
