    Neal Martin, December 2015,
    Score: 96-98

The 2014 Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru, matured in two-thirds new oak, has an incredibly powerful and pure bouquet that already possesses dizzying, seductive intensity. Wow. The palate has a satin-like texture, perfect acidity and filigree tannin. However, it is the purity of this wine and the shimmering tension on the finish that is totally entrancing. One of the wines of the vintage? Most certainly. Bravo Sebastien. Drink 2022-2045

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2016,
    Score: 93-96

The middle weight plus flavors are decidedly finer than those of the Malconsorts due to the super sleek tannins that contribute to the lilting mouth feel, all wrapped in a restrained, understated and superbly classy finish that just goes on and on. This is a wine of harmony and finesse that is beautifully balanced and should amply reward extended aging. This is quite simply gorgeous. Don't miss 93-96! Drink 2029+

    Sarah Marsh, December 2015

Two thirds new oak now…one of the three…oh I say..a delightful aroma of rose petals, heady rose garden in summer. All about the texture…sweepingly elegant and satin-smooth on the palate..deep, intense and pure. there is a vivid quality to the fruit, gorgeous freshness and such a scented, pure and refined finish….so aromatic at the end…….

Producer

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.

Region

Romanée-Saint-Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
