Goedhuis, December 2016
A real star in the making. Although still very youthful, there is an abundance of bright fresh damson and autumnal berry fruits. In the palate, flavours balance a strength of volume with a harmonious roundness. I have tasted this wine on several occasions and it never disappoints. Great length with deliciously sweet fruit on the finish. Drink 2020 - 2030.
Domaine Alain Michelot
This is our first en primeur offering of the superb Nuits St Georges range from Alain Michelot and his delightful daughter and son-in-law, Elodie and Christian. The Michelots’ winemaking roots date back to the 19th century making them firmly part of the Nuits St Georges establishment, encompassing 8 hectares of some of the finest vineyards in the commune. There is nothing clever or complicated about this estate. Christian has a reputation for being the first on the hillside in the morning and last to leave at night. He even mentioned tending his vines at 3.00 am following the April 2016 frost. They ensure their vines produce optimum quality fruit and intervene minimally in the cellar with limited use of new oak. The Michelot wines are one of the most exciting recent introductions to our list.
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
