Goedhuis, December 2015
This tiny 1er cru (0.5ha) on the lower slopes below Mazis Chambertin is owned almost entirely by Domaine Drouhin Laroze. It tends to be a forward-drinking style, with appealing ripe autumnal flavoured fruit. A very inviting wine, with subtly fresh acidity at the end.

Neal Martin, December 2015,
Score: 85-87The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Au Closeau comes from 30- to 40-year-old vines. It has a simple red cherry and crushed strawberry-scented nose that is nicely composed and understated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a keen line of acidity, but it needs a little more substance on the finish that feels just a little "lightweight" compared to the superior Crepiots. Hopefully it will fill out by the time of bottling. Drink 2017-2025

Burghound, January 2016,
Score: 88-91Once again there is a touch of wood spice in evidence on the ultra-fresh, cool and pure aromas of black pinot fruit, earth and herbal tea. The finer and more mineral-inflected medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension to the moderately austere but solidly persistent finale. Drink 2021+

Producer
Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
Region
Gevrey-Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
