Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2015

Although a little closed at the time of tasting, one could feel the balance and charm so typical of this great vineyard. There is a gentle sweetness of fruit supported by subtle freshness and this will certainly develop to be graceful and give lots of pleasure.

    Score: 90-92

The 2014 Corton Les Marechaudes Grand Cru has a detailed nose of brambly red fruit, briary, pressed white flowers and limestone - really captivating aromatics that I hope will be as nuanced and expressive once in bottle. The palate is fresh and vibrant with refined tannin. There is a gentle but persistent grip here, linear at first but opening slightly towards the citrus finish. I would have just liked a little more persistence and flesh, but this remains a very intellectual Corton Marechaudes that may warrant a higher score once in bottle. Drink 2018-2032

    Score: 18.25

Richer and full, summer fruit aroma. Deep cherry notes. Full-bodied and generous; juicy and open palate. Rich smooth tannins. It full, but not heavy; there is depth and a relaxed, easy character…a charmer. Forward and fruity and with just enough balancing freshness.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
