Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, December 2015
This fully structured and intensely flavoured wine is a very good example from the Côte de Nuits’ most substantial Grand Cru. Brilliant purple colour, there are hints of liquorice and roasted Arabic coffee on the nose. In the palate it is full, with a feeling of masculinity and structure, which provides great length and many layers of flavours at the end.

Neal Martin, December 2015,
Score: 91-93The 2014 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which is completely destemmed, has a sweet, almost pastille-like bouquet with maraschino cherry, blueberry and violet notes, not unlike a Chambolle Amoureuses in some ways. I like the exuberance displayed here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple black fruit, the oak just a little dominating towards the finish although there is decent depth and persistence in place. Give it 4-5 years in bottle. Drink 2019-2032

Burghound, January 2016,
Score: 90-93Generous if not dominant wood and menthol scents fight somewhat with the ripe essence of plum, dark berries, game and earth. Here too there is excellent volume and plenty of power to the mouth coating and muscular flavors that are robust and quite serious but a bit less austere than usual. That said, note that this is very firmly structured and is clearly going to require a long stay in a cool cellar. Drink 2029+

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.
