Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2015

A beautifully poised Grand Cru, with refined white peach and rose petal aromas. In the palate it balances elegance and grace with subtle levels of power. Deliciously full and vibrant on the finish. Lovely.

    Neal Martin, December 2015,
    Score: 94-96

The 2014 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru takes a few swirls of the glass to really get going, eventually developing subtle peardrop and nectarine notes that patiently wait behind the stony veneer. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry with a fine line of acidity, brisk and lively, hints of peach and pineapple coming through on the seductive and flattering finish that has plenty of roundness. This is just gorgeous, but it needs several years in the cellar. Drink 2020-2040

  • BURG

    Burghound, June 2016,
    Score: 93-95

(from 25+ year old vines that are situated on the very highest of the 4 terraces; aged in 50% new oak). An airy, cool and quite pure nose evidences the mineral reduction nuances that one typically finds in a fine Chevalier along with citrus, spice, essence of pear and dried floral aromas that are trimmed in soft wood. The wonderfully refined, textured and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors seem to be extracted directly from liquid rock before culminating in a chiseled, lemony and cuts-like-a-knife delineated finish that delivers superb length. As the best examples of Chevalier seem to always do this elegant effort combines finesse with power and class. Drink 2026+

  • SM

    Sarah Marsh, December 2015,
    Score: 19.8

High toned; vertical; lime citrus aroma. Notes of aniseed and fennel. Very tight, vigorous and athletic palate; slightly nervy. It has marked austerity. Wonderful tension on the finish.

Domaine Etienne Sauzet

Etienne Sauzet is one of the great estates of Puligny Montrachet, taking its name from current incumbent Emilie Riffault's great grandfather who founded this domaine in the early 1900s. It boasts 15 hecatres of vineyards, comprising four white grands crus in Puligny and Chassagne and nine premiers crus. Today, under Emilie and husband Benoit's direction, their owned vineyards are fully biodynamic and they are one of the flag bearers for the appellation of Puligny.

Region

Chevalier-Montrachet

Chevalier-Montrachet is a tiny Grand Cru appellation for white wine situated on the stony slopes just above Le Montrachet towards the southern end of the Cote d'Or. The wines are exceptional, if slightly lighter in style than their neighbour down the hill.
