Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2015

The site of a chapel between the 12th and 19th centuries, this is a superb vineyard location below Clos de Bèze. The 2014 is an absolute stunner, full of wild dark forest fruits. There is a wonderful richness and volume of fruit in this wine; flamboyant, generous and concentrated. This will give enormous pleasure.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2015,
    Score: 89-91

The 2014 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a noticeable dark colour. There is plenty of dark cherry and black plum fruit on the nose, quite fresh with violet scents developing with aeration, though not a complex bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with quite fine tannin and well judged acidity. It is a linear Chapelle-Chambertin, a "correct" grand cru with a straightlaced finish that needs just a little more persistence. Drink 2017-2029

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2016,
    Score: 89-92

Generous but not dominant wood and menthol notes fight somewhat with the otherwise fresh black cherry and pungent earth aromas. The round and naturally sweet medium-bodied flavors brim with both plenty of dry extract and a fine minerality that continues onto the seductively textured and relatively fine if youthfully austere finish. Drink 2024+

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Chapelle-Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
