Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2015

Big, powerful and generous, everything Chambertin should be. The naturally sweet loganberry fruit is enhanced by a fine freshness which carries the flavours through the structured layers. Generous and full, quite simply very delicious.

Seven pièces from two people who make Chambertin. They sell because Bellene pays more than they get on export markets. Very dark crimson. Making only the best. Sumptuous nose – very heady. Juicy and dense. Not the densest Chambertin. But very fresh. Treacle note and masses of acidity. Drink 2030-2050

Producer

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.

Region

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
