Tasting Notes

  • RP

    Robert Parker, December 2015,
    Score: 93-95

The 2014 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has a focused, stony, stoic bouquet with fine mineralité, but clearly prefers you to wait several years for it to fully open. In this sense it is the sibling of the 2014 Clos du Cailleret. There are traces of peach skin and jasmine that emerge with time, a little honeysuckle, however everything here is kept in check. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry, saline and driven by the acidity with a touch of pepper enlivening the finish that gently fans out, yet never loses its head. This is another very fine Grand Cru. 93-95 points.

Domaine Chartron

The best winemakers are often extraordinarily humble; they have a wonderful way of playing down their skills as winemakers, but are always incredibly respectful of their vineyard holdings. Location and site is the key to making great wine, and this philosophy is brilliantly highlighted at the beautiful rather and son domaine of J-P Chartron. Father Jean-Pierre was vineyard manager for Bouchard Ainé with the responsibility for their 30 hectares in the appellation of Mercurey. As a result, nobody understands the appellation and soil types better, surely than Jean-Pierre. Over the years he has selected his favourite vineyard parcels showcasing the different styles within the village to build up the family domaine. This is a stunning address and highlights both the quality and potential for the wines from the area.

Region

Bâtard-Montrachet

Bâtard-Montrachet is a great white Grand Cru in Burgundy's Côte D'or. Its vineyards are located onthe slope beneath Le Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. Bâtard-Montrachet's soils are heavier than those surrounding it, made up of brown limestone and gravel, which pave the way for rich, nutty, honeyed and heady wines with good structure. They are not as elegant as those from Chevalier-Montrachet and are broader and weightier than wines from Montrachet.
