Goedhuis, January 2019
Fratelli Alessandria, based in Verduno, the northern-most outpost of Barolo, has for some years been quietly crafting some of the purest wines in the region. This 2014 village Barolo is drinking beautifully; it is charming, elegant and inviting. With perfumed red berry aromas, dried rose petals and violets on the nose it really draws you in. It is full-bodied and unfurls on the palate with notes of pomegranate, cranberry, red berries, violets and herbs. It has a gorgeous structure and is incredibly drinkable already.

Gianfranco Alessandria's 2014 Barolo is gorgeous in this vintage. Aromatically expressive and pliant in feel, the 2014 is super-inviting. Sweet red cherry, rose petal and mint are pushed forward, but it is the wine's balance and sense of proportion that make it one of the hidden gems in this vintage. Silky tannins provide tons of near- and medium-term appeal. There is much to like here. 2020 - 2039

Wine Advocate, August 2018, Score: 91
The Fratelli Alessandria 2014 Barolo is a streamlined and elegant wine that imparts delicate tones of wild berry, spice, licorice, rosemary twig and candied orange peel. This is a classic expression and an absolute embodiment of Barolo tradition. The finish is long and silky with lingering tones of smoke and crushed mineral. This wine is very nicely done. It ages slowly in large Slavonian oak casks for three years. Some 20,000 bottles were produced. Drink Date 2019 - 2030

Decanter, November 2018, Score: 93
Vittore Alessandria merges tradition, blending crus and using large barrels, with modernity – stainless steel tanks and medium to short fermentations. The result is splendid: a carpet of flowers and herbs filling the glass and irresistible drinkability. Drink 2019-2035

Softly spicy and with a savoury mineral note. Fresh and minerally with fine cherry fruit and lively acidity. Pinot Noir style. Clinging tasty tannins and perfumed fruit finish. Well done. (WS)

In the small medieval village of Verduno lies the historic Fratelli Alessandria cellar. The family has tended vines in the region since the beginning of the 19th century and today their 12 hectares stretch over some of the best crus in Verduno and also Monforte. This is a true family affair, Gian Battista Alessandria and his wife Flavia tend to the vines while his brother Alessandro and his son Vittore are in the winery. Together, they craft high-quality artisanal wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety but also from some Dolcetto, Barbera and the little-known Pelaverga variety. The Barolos from the village of Verduno are highly distinct and can be lighter, lacier and more elegant than those from other villages.Read less

Region
Barolo
With Brunello in Tuscany, Barolo is undoubtedly Italy's finest wine producing region. Located in Piedmont in the north west of Iataly Barolo is comprised of 5 major communes - Barolo, Monteforte d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba - though the latter three tend to represent the main styles of the region. The wines are compelling and polished - an exemplary expression of the Nebbiolo grape. DOCG law requires a minimum ageing of 2 years in cask or barrel yet can be longer depending on the producer. Barolos are generally released four or more years after the vintage.
