Tasting Notes
-
Burghound, January 2015,
Score: 87-89A more deeply pitched nose offers up an airy but ripe mix of red and blue pinot fruit along with lovely spice and floral nuances. There is a soft earthy character present on the vibrant and delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess a markedly finer palate feel, all wrapped in a firm and slightly austere finish. A quality villages. Drink 2019+

Sarah Marsh, November 2014
60% new oak. Red fruit, juicy, upright and zesty. Plenty of spice. Straight and more nervy on the palate, and taut on the finish. It does not taste as phenolically ripe as the other village wines or have quite the substance I expect. Maybe it was an awkward time. I think it needs the second winter in barrel on full lees to gain mid palate and gras.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.
Region
Vosne Romanée
The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
