Goedhuis, January 2015
The purest and raciest of the Volnay 1er Crus, with a reputation amongst most growers for making the most sophisticated wines in the village. This has sublimely pure fresh red Pinot characteristics, racy, fresh and yet beautifully sweet. Lovely fine length that lingers forever.

Neal Martin, December 2014, Score: 91-93
The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Caillerets is more austere on the nose compared to the Fremiets, but there is more transparency and definition here, the terroir percolating through the red and black fruit. The palate is chewy on the entry with good depth, a little abrasive at the moment but there is a keen thread of acidity combined with good structure on the finish that suggests this should age nicely over the next two decades. There is also a lovely saline tang on the aftertaste that urges another sip. Very fine. Drink: 2016 - 2028

The Voillots have been winemakers for 5 generations. They produce 17 appellations from 35 parcels in 10 hectares across 4 communes including Pommard and Volnay. Since 1995, Joseph's hearty and jolly son-in-law, Jean-Pierre Charlot, has taken over the domaine. His personality makes it worth the trip alone. Luckily the wines are superb as well - terroir-driven, classically styled and silky - they are hallmarks of top quality Côte de Beaune reds.Read less

Region
Volnay
A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
