Once again there is just enough oak treatment present to warrant noting as it that serves as a backdrop for the distinctly different aromatic profile that includes scents of the sauvage, humus, earth, exotic tea, violets and a cool mix of red and dark pinot fruit. Olivier Bernstien set up his small, elite négociant business in Beaune in 2007, and over the past ten years has gained a reputation for his stellar clutch of exquisite premiers and grands crus from the Côte de Nuits. The 2012 release put him firmly on the map, and since then he has met the challenges of each subsequent vintage with aplomb, producing wines of disarming beauty and grace. The most recent release, his 2016s, mark a high point in the canon, where glossy fruit is perfectly paired with luxurious but refined oak (he uses 100% new French oak, in barrels custom made for each cuvée by the cooper Chassin).
Mazis-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the north of the Grand Cru area of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard lies on a limestone subsoil, topped with brown, chalky soil. It is sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Mazis-Chambertin is very aromatic, dark in colour and long lasting.
