Tasting Notes

  • BURG1

    Burghound, January 2015,
    Score: 89-92

Not surprisingly this is quite aromatically similar to the regular cuvée except that the fruit is slightly riper and there is a trace of menthol lurking in the background. There is fine richness and excellent concentration to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a suave and rounded mouth feel while retaining a fine sense of delineation on the solidly complex and wonderfully persistent finish. This is on the toasty side but there is no denying the excellent underlying material, particularly for a villages level wine. Note though that this will definitely need patience as it's clearly built to age. Drink 2022+

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2016,
    Score: 89

Gentle wood frames a fresh and layered blend of relatively high-toned red berry fruit aromas that combine with notes of herbal tea, cassis, earth and underbrush. There is lovely detail to the medium weight flavors that possess not only good verve but also a finer mouth feel before terminating in a delicious, complex, balanced and linear finale. This too is a fine Gevrey villages that should definitely benefit from a few years of cellar time as it's presently youthfully austere. Drink 2019+

Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, mocha and underbrush could use a bit more youthful lift. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, offering early appeal but only modest complexity and thrust. The initially fine-grained tannins turned slightly dry with air. Drink 2019-2025

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
