Tasting Notes

Neal Martin, December 2014,
Score: 88-90From Bernard’s 75-year-old vines, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin les Evocelles has a very expressive bouquet, with dark cherries and blackberry neatly carrying the new oak. The palate is sweet and concentrated on the entry with saturated tannins, mulberry and black plum forming the rounded, quite powerful finish. Fine, but a bit "stocky" at the moment. Drink: 2018 - 2030

Burghound, January 2015,
Score: 89-92(from a .75 ha vineyard worked manually and by horse; vinified with 75% stems). There is enough reduction present to push the fruit to the background but what is discernible clearly seems ripe. The palate impression of the delineated middle weight flavors is more mineral-driven if less powerful with excellent underlying tension adding a lovely sense of vibrancy to the mouth coating, balanced, saline and wonderfully long finish. This too offers outstanding quality for its level and is well-worth your attention. Drink 2023+

Region
Gevrey-Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
