Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2014

Full of cinnamon spice and black berry fruits. A wine with volume and sweet richness. Hugely rewarding and will give masses of pleasure.

  • BURG

    Burghound, April 2015,
    Score: 89-91

While hardly subtle in this case the wood application is a bit less prominent on the slightly riper red berry fruit, sauvage, tea and earth-scented nose. There is really lovely detail to the mineral-driven, delicious and solidly complex flavors that don't possess quite the same mid-palate concentration but even better length. I suspect this will harmonize faster than the Lavaut. Drink 2021+

Producer

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.

Region

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
