Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2014

One of the most central vineyards in the appellation, this wine, whilst a little reserved on the nose, has great strength and richness on the palate. A concentrated and full wine with a broad, powerful finish.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2014,
    Score: 88-90

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur has a more earthy bouquet compared to Drouhin-Laroze's fellow '13s: nicely defined, but broody at first. A few swirls of the glass and it begins to awaken. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red tarty fruit, hints of orange and marmalade with a straightforward but focused, easy-drinking finish. Drink: 2016 - 2027

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2015,
    Score: 90-92

Here there is no reductive funk as the very pretty and attractively layered nose of very fresh red pinot fruit that displays added aromatic breadth in the form of pomegranate, cherry and soft earth nuances. There is good energy and lovely detail to the middle weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the firm but not really austere, balanced and persistent finish. A classic Clos Prieur of finesse and punch. Drink 2021+

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Gevrey-Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
