Tasting Notes

    Neal Martin, December 2014,
    Score: 90-92

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Cuvée des Merles Grand Cru has a slight reduction on the nose that will disappear after racking. The palate is clean and fresh with small dark cherries, a touch of blueberry, good acidity and fine tension on the finish. This keeps the character of Charmes-Chambertin and offers a fine purity and elegance. It just does not possess quite the same convincing depth and breadth of Laurent's other 2013 Grand Crus at this prenatal moment. Drink: 2016 - 2035

    Score: 91-94

(from Mazoyères; a merle is a blackbird). Reduction flattens the nose to the point that it is unreadable. By contrast there is excellent freshness and intensity to the big-bodied flavors that possess robust tannins and impressive power on the punchy finish that is austere, serious and impressively long. There is an abundance of dry extract that coats the palate and while this is on the awkward side today the underlying material is so good that this should come together in time though I underscore that plenty of it will be necessary. Drink 2028+

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".

Region

Charmes Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
