Wine Advocate, June 2016,
The 2013 Chardonnay has a youthfully reticent nose of ripe apricots, grapefruit and crushed cashews with ginger, cedar, struck match and orange blossoms in the background. The palate is a medium to full-bodied powerhouse, possessing a satiny texture, many layers, a great acid backbone and wonderful length. Drink 2017 - 2027
Vibrant green and gold in colour. The aroma of gun flint and 'old Giaconda dirt', the good type that adds further dimension to white stone fruit aromas that are spiced with citrus rind aromatics. Brings back memories of the early 90s wines with the taste of granite and quartz bringing a minerality to the end palate. A sweet smell of complex decomposed granitic humus and clay provides a distinctive stamp to this Estate Vineyard wine.
Giaconda is a shining star in the firmament of Australian wine alongside Leeuwin Estate and Penfolds Grange, it’s just its rarity that makes it less well known amongst ardent collectors. Demand regularly outstrips supply making both the Giaconda’s Shiraz and Chardonnay scarce in the UK market. The estate in Beechwood, Victoria, is lauded by critics worldwide, and winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner is considered a Chardonnay master. Indeed, in March 2015 Decanter Magazine picked Giaconda as one of the world’s greatest Chardonnay producers. The estate’s 400m elevation ensures the wines are vibrant and fresh, and the gentle winemaking produces outstandingly terroir-driven wines.
