    Score: 93

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine du Clos Frantin, aka Albert Bichot, has a very well defined bouquet, extremely well focused with vibrant raspberry coulis and wild strawberry scents infused with wonderful mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, sappy in style with good depth towards the finish. There is real substance here, impressive length and the sophistication you expect from a Chambertin. This punches well above its performance in barrel -- this is well worth seeking out. Tasted September 2016. Drink 2020-2040

  • BURG

There is hint of menthol on the overtly sauvage aromas of mostly cool and pungently earthy red berry fruit. There is fine intensity and plenty of muscle to the almost pungently mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess outstanding persistence on the well-balanced finish. Note however that this is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar as this is particularly robust and very much built for longer-term aging. Drink 2017+

Solid crimson. Scented, medicinal nose. Lots of pure fruit on the front palate and then a bone-dry finish. Very ambitious and muscular. Very embryonic. This tastes as though the fruit had been allowed to speak. Long and reverberant. Drink 2022-2035

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
