Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, April 2014,
Score: 89-91Brilliant, bright deep purple colour. This is quite a robust Margaux in the typical Rauzan mould. A full fruited style, with good sweetness and an appealingly long lingering finish.
-
Neal Martin, October 2016,
Score: 90The 2013 Rauzan-Segla has an elegant bouquet with blackberry and briary scents as well as a subtle violet scent that gently unfurls in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite an attractive, pastille-like entry, decent weight in the mouth with a harmonious, nonchalant, quite detailed finish that will leave you wanting another sip. If you insist upon a Margaux from this vintage - here is where to come.

Neal Martin, April 2014,
Score: 89-91The grand vin has a fine bouquet, not complex but clean and fresh with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, nicely integrated oak. It needs a little more delineation although it does appear to gain clarity with encouragement. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, perhaps a little more rustic than usual but with good weight. Fine red fruit, linear and masculine, this deserves two or three years in bottle after release.

Decanter, April 2014,
Score: 90+Dense, purple rim, lovely depth of fruit, smoothness of texture unexpected from 2013, seductively deep and still very Margaux. Drink: 2017-2030

Matthew Jukes, April 2014,
Score: 17.5+With 70% new oak this could be a bit of a beast but the fruit is very lush considering the frailties of many Margaux in 2013. The nose is stunning with layers of red fruit and the texture is flamboyant and the finish superbly long. There are feisty, boisterous tannins but these are highlighted by delicious red cherry notes. The oak is awesomely well-judged, too. A triumph in this difficult vintage.

Château Rauzan-Ségla

Originating in the 17th century, Rauzan Sègla was created by Pierre de Mesures de Rauzan whopurchased large tracts of land which included neighbouring Rauzan Gassies, Desmirail and Marquisde Terme. Within a short period of time, Rauzan Sègla became high on collectors lists rivallingLéoville, Gruaud Larose and Mouton Rothschild. One of its followers included Thomas Jeffersonwho purchased several cases of the 1790 vintage. Over the years it was divided and sold on to various owners falling deeper and deeper into oblivion until the 1980s when its old, wooden vats were replaced with stainless steel and excellent clones of Cabernet Sauvignon replaced the tired Merlot. In 1994, the château was taken over by Chanel who have continued this drive for quality.
Region
Margaux
Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
