Producer
François Cotat

Since 1947, the Cotat family has been producing some of the most exceptional wines that the Loire has to offer. Today, François is at the helm of this wonderfully modest, tiny domaine (a modest 4 hectares) inheriting his father's parcels of old vines when he and his cousin Pascal separated thefamily vineyard in 1990. Their success and individuality can be attributed to François' intense passion for creating the finest examples of the Sauvignon Blanc grape and his exceptionally placed vineyards. Organic viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. In the winery, traditional non-intervention winemaking is the rule with little handling and no fining or filtration. A visit to their ancient cellar is a testament to this old-fashioned way of thinking. This is the way wines should be made - calmly, naturally and slowly.
Region
Sancerre
The picturesque town of Sancerre perches atop a hill on the left bank of the Loire with vineyards planted on limestone and clay hillsides. A total of 14 villages and 3 hamlets have the rights to produce Sancerre, and, due to the increasing popularity of the wine, the area under vine trebled in the last quarter of the 20th century. Often considered the classic home of Sauvignon Blanc, good Sancerre is crisp, elegant and aromatic, and among the finest and most complex Sauvignons in the world. Delicate reds and roses are also made from Pinot Noir.
