Burghound, January 2014,
There is a touch of wood framing the ripe and intensely earthy and sauvage nose of plum and violets. The impressively scaled and concentrated flavors ooze mouth coating dry extract that here too serves to impart a sappy texture to the highly complex, balanced and very firm finish that delivers knock-out length where about the only nit is a barely perceptible hint of backend warmth. As with all of the '12 Confuron grands crus, plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2026+
Stephen Tanzer, November 2014,
Medium red. Knockout nose melds wild crushed red berries, coffee and animal fur, plus a suggestion of almost exotic fruits. Dense, sweet and fine-grained; wonderfully fleshy and yet the wine's outstanding energy and powerful mineral element make it almost painful in the early going, even if it's more expressive than the Clos Vougeot. Finishes with outstanding length and sweetness and superb sappy lift. Should be long-lived. Drink 2023-2037
Domaine J Confuron-Cotétidot
Yves Confuron runs this family domaine located in Vosne-Romanée, as well as making wines for Domaine de Courcel in Pommard. The wines of Confuron-Cotétidot are characterised by their amazing ability to age and develop. As well as some enviable Grand Cru parcels the domaine also has two hectares of the great Vosne Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots.
Mazis-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the north of the Grand Cru area of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard lies on a limestone subsoil, topped with brown, chalky soil. It is sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Mazis-Chambertin is very aromatic, dark in colour and long lasting.
